UNDIP Students Promote Reading Interest through Digital Literacy Content

Low reading interest remains a persistent challenge in enhancing literacy culture within communities. Contributing factors include limited time for reading and the lack of appealingly packaged information regarding the content and benefits of available books. Addressing this issue, Elvina Dhea Saputri and Fadhilah Puti Syaharani—students of the Thematic Community Service Program (KKNT IDBU 13) at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP)—launched a digital literacy initiative titled “Singgah Baca” (Stop & Read) in Teras Village, Boyolali Regency, as a strategic effort to foster reading interest through digital media.

The program was implemented throughout July 2026 as part of the multidisciplinary KKNT IDBU 13 activities in Teras Village. In its execution, the two students selected three books from the local library collection—Na Willa, Kita Pergi Hari Ini, and 1001 Kisah Tanya—each deemed to carry strong moral messages and educational values relevant to diverse readerships. Every book was reviewed in the form of Instagram carousel posts, featuring the book title, author, a brief synopsis, and compelling reasons why the book is worth reading. This concise and engaging presentation is expected to help the public recognize the essence of a book before deciding to read it in its entirety.

Beyond carousel posts on the Instagram account @bacaaditeras, each upload was also complemented by short videos highlighting the moral values or life lessons that can be drawn from each book. Through this combination of visuals, story summaries, and moral takeaways, the “Singgah Baca” content is designed to spark public curiosity and encourage the formation of reading habits through more engaging and easily accessible digital platforms.

To maximize outreach, all content was published on the Instagram account @bacaaditeras. Furthermore, information regarding these literacy contents was also disseminated through various WhatsApp groups in Teras Village, enabling broader community access and encouraging more residents to explore the recommended book selections.

Through this comprehensive series of activities, the people of Teras Village are expected to become more familiar with a variety of available reading materials and to be motivated to cultivate a daily reading habit. The strategic use of social media and WhatsApp group networks is anticipated to expand community access to literacy information, ensuring that a culture of reading continues to thrive in the area.

The implementation of this program represents a tangible contribution of KKNT IDBU 13 students at Universitas Diponegoro in executing the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education), specifically in the realm of community service. Through this digital literacy innovation, the program developed by Elvina Dhea Saputri and Fadhilah Puti Syaharani also actively supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG 4 (Quality Education) by improving access to learning resources, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) through the utilization of digital media as a literacy platform, and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by fostering a more inclusive community with better access to information and knowledge.
